Do you know how to properly maintain a regulated box mod? When you drop a bunch of money on a device, you probably want to make sure it lasts as long as possible. Every day I hear, see or read about someone’s device going sideways. What is sad is that 9 times out of 10 the reason the box mod ceased to function was something that could have been easily avoided with a little bit of care, maintenance and attention. Kick back, relax and let’s take a few minutes to make sure you get the most out of that regulated device.
First Things First
Before we go any further, I want you to bear in mind that these pointers will not keep your device alive for ever. It is after all an electronic device, which will one day inexplicably turn around and die, what we are trying to achieve is way to prolong it’s life span. It takes batteries, has a circuit board and a thousand different things that could malfunction at a moments notice, but lets make sure that we aren’t doing anything to help it along on its journey to the scrap yard.
Its Not A Race Car
When was the last time you got into your car and pushed the gas peddle to the floor before you turned on the ignition switch? Now combine that with keeping it there until the tank run’s out of gas and you will touch upon my first point here. For some reason, a lot of vapers believe that chain vaping low builds all day long is not detrimental to their box mod: eventually it will be. If you are looking to keep a device running for a significant amount of time, running it at its maximum wattage all day every day will not help. Just like the race car in the analogy, it will over heat and quit before the tank is empty. Building a little higher and putting less stress on the circuitry will increase the lifespan of your device.
Pay Attention
Your regulated box mod is likely in your hand all day every day, if you are anything like me you could probably draw it perfectly with your eyes closed – maybe that is just me. From day one, you know how the device feels, how it functions so you should quickly pick up on any variations in functionality. Paying attention to the small things will prevent many big things developing later on. If you pull out a battery and the wrapper is ripped, find out what caused it. It may have been the fact that you yanked it out without pushing up on the spring end, but it may actually be damage to the inside of the battery sled. Give the device a once over every day, if anything major has changed, you will notice.
The Box Mod’s Name Is Not Pig Pen
Unless for some strange reason you named your regulated device after the messy kid from Charlie Brown. Treat your device with respect and make sure it is clean. It sounds simple but many people over look this fact. As with any electronic device, if it has to make a circuit, life will be easier for the machine if the contact points are free of oxidation. Every time you change out the batteries, give the sled area a wipe out. Make sure it is free of debris and clean away any gunk that has formed in the corners.
You Wouldn’t Take Your Phone Swimming
If you poured a bottle of coke over the top of your cell phone, chances are you would be sitting in a corner rocking back and forth as you pray that it will survive the ordeal. Electronics and liquid do not mix – any liquid. If you over drip and get e-liquid all over your mod, clean it up before it gets down through the 510 connector and into the circuitry. If you do get e-liquid in the 510, make sure you clean it out. I have found that if the e-liquid does find it’s way inside the device, turn it off, lay it connector down on paper towels in a warm room for 24 hours to make sure it has chance to dry out. Trying to use a mod that has e-liquid inside the 510 is the leading cause for premature death in regulated devices.
Simple Maintenance
If your box mod has a spring loaded 510 and battery connection points, make sure they are still springy. If they are catching, chances are they have small pieces of debris caught inside them and a little TLC is all it will take to fix them. Keep the channels clear if your battery has a slide door, don’t let gunk spoil your vaping experience.

Maintaining a regulated device is not rocket surgery and it honestly takes seconds out of your day. I personally prefer my vaping devices to keep working for as long as possible, generally because I am a cheap skate who hates parting with money to begin with, but also because I want to get the most out of my purchase that I can.
