Reports coming out of El Cajon seem to suggest that Alfred Olango, the unarmed black man who was shot dead by police on Sept 27, may have pulled out a vaporizer from his front pocket and pointed it at police.

Alfred’s sister called police stating that her brother was “not acting like himself” and stated several times that he was mentally sick. When police showed up, Alfred failed to follow commands from police and kept his hand in his pockets.

According to police accounts, several of the officers had drawn their guns and at least one officer had a taser drawn when he refused to take his hands out of his pockets. When Alfred pulled his hand out and extended “something” in the face of one of the officers, taking a shooting stance, the officers fired several shots as well as a taser.

Alfred was transported to the hospital where he died of his injuries. Video footage shows an evidence marker next to a vape mod laying on the ground. Many witnesses are claiming that the “something” he pointed at officers, was this vape mod.

The tragic loss of Alfred Olango’s life has many people in the community wondering what could have been done differently to avoid the use of deadly force, especially when his sister claims that she told dispatch several times that he was mentally sick and she called them to help him.

If it is found that Alfred did point the vape pictured at officers, it would likely justify the use of deadly force due to it’s similarities to a
gun and the way he seems to be holding it.

If he wasn’t holding anything, it will likely result in social unrest and more investigations on how the El Cajon police department handled this situation.

Many residents of El Cajon claims that this shooting is racially motivated, due to the fact that he was unarmed and black. That may be the case, but if the object he pointed at police was a vape, they probably would have shot anyone holding it in such a manner, black or white.

Regardless of the evidence and the ongoing investigation, there are protests planned in El Cajon tonight and the local community is upset over this shooting.

If you are ever in a position where the police are detaining you, please remember that your vape mod can be seen as a weapon in certain situations. It has a large caliber barrel, it is made of metal, and it is about the size of a compact handgun. All these features can lead to someone thinking you have a gun, even if it is for a split second. That split second may decide your fate.

So please make sure when you are around police or anyone else who is carrying a gun, that you don’t lead them to believe your vape is a weapon. Let them see it and tell them what it is before things get out of hand.
