As a result of the Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association and public comments, the FDA has announced Friday that it’s extending the originally given 75-day comment period for the proposed federal regulation over electronic cigarettes, 30 more days, totaling a 105-day comment period.
The Food and Drug Administration said that the public comment period originally set to end July 9, is being extended an additional 30 days to Aug. 8. The extension was due to the FDA receiving a lot of input on how to regulate e-cigarettes.
Though the comment period extension isn’t the 180-day total CASAA was hoping for and e-cigarette consumers requested, it does however show that the FDA is at least willing to be some-what fair on the matter, even though that’s hardly the case.
In CASAA’s first Call to Action for the proposed federal regulations requesting an extension of the original comment period, Julie Woessner from CASAA called the 75-day comment period “grossly inadequate” with the given length of time FDA has taken to release the proposed regulations, the massive amount of information FDA is requesting, the length of the document itself, and the devastating impact these regulations will have on a product that is estimated to be approximately 99% less hazardous than combustibles.
